South Charleston

South Charleston is a city in Kanawha County, West Virginia, United States. The population was 13,639 at the 2020 census. It is home to the Charleston Ordnance Center, a former naval munitions factory established for use in World War I. The city is located at 38°219N 81°4243W (38.352455, 81.712001). According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 8.51 square miles (22.04 km²), of which 7.61 sq mi (19.71 km²) is land and 0.90sq mi (2.33 km²") is water. South Charleston serves as the headquarters to the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources and the WestVirginia State Police. The Criel Mound built circa 0 B.C. by the Adena culture is adjacent to the downtown business district. It was established in 1906, but not incorporated until 1917. It employed over 11,000 workers and produced 130,000 gun barrels for U.S. warships. In South Charleston are the headquarters of International Industries, the group of subsidiaries of James HBuck "Buck" Harless, who founded the company in 1947. The main parent company of the company is Harless International Industries. The company was founded primarily in 1947 by James H. Harless "B Buck" Har less, but also includes natural resources such as coal and timber, as well as real estate.

History

South Charleston is the primary city name, but also Charleston, S Charleston are acceptable city names or spellings. The official name is City of South Charleston. South Charleston was established in 1906, but not incorporated until 1917. It is home to the Charleston Ordnance Center, a former naval munitions factory established for use in World War I. The South Carolina River runs through the city, and was once the source of the city's nickname, "The River of the South" It was also used as a shipping hub during the Civil War, during which time the city was known as "the River City" and "The Red River" It is now the home of the Charleston Air Force Base, which is based in the town of South Charleston, South Carolina, and has a base of operations for the Air Force, Navy, and Marine Corps. It has a population of over 10,000 people, including over 3,000 airmen and Marines, and is one of the largest military bases in the United States, along with Fort McHenry in Washington, D.C. and Fort Benning.

The city is also home to South Carolina State University, which opened its doors in 1876. The University of South Carolina has a campus that opened in 1878. The campus is located on the campus' main campus and is known as the "College of Arts and Sciences" It is the oldest college in the state, with a population of 2,856. The university has a history of more than 100 years, dating back to its founding in 1879. It was the first college in South Carolina to open in 1881. A South Charleston campus for BridgeValley Community and Technical College is located at the former Dow Chemical research facility and the Marshall University South Charleston Campus is a branch of Marshall University. The city is also home to the University of South Carolina at Charleston, which is a member of the South Carolina College of Arts and Sciences, and the College of Charleston, where students can take classes in the evenings and on the weekends. The South Charleston area is home to more than 1,000 colleges and universities, many of which are based in the state of West Virginia. It is also the home of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, which was founded in 1799. The U.N. World War II Memorial is located in Charleston and was dedicated to the memory of those who died in World War I. It was also the site of the Battle of the Bulge, which took place in 1858. The town has a population of about 3,000 people and is the largest city in West Virginia, along with the state's capital, Charleston.

Arts and culture

The South Charleston Museum is located in the historic LaBelle Theater on D Street. The Interpretive Center is located at 313 D street and features the Appalachian trail, the Mound, Indian artifacts, arrowheads, chemical history and artifacts. The city is also home to a community center, an ice arena, Little Creek Park, Little Creek Country Club and Joplin Park. South Charleston is home to the West Virginia Film Series, Open Mic Night, exhibitions, and other events. It is also the site of the South Charleston Adena Burial Mound. The South Charleston Mound is a burial site for the Adena people of South Charleston, West Virginia. The Mound was built in the 17th century and is one of the oldest burial mounds in the United States. The Appalachian trail is also located in South Charleston and runs through the center of the city. The interpretive center is located on 313 D Street and features a West Virginia film series, open mic nights, and exhibitions. It also features a Belgium display depicting the first business in the city, and Blenko birthday pieces donated by Pearl Watson. The interpretation center also has a display of Blenko's birthday pieces, as well as other artifacts donated by the Blenko family. The museum is open seven days a week and is open to the public. The Museum is open from 9am to 5pm, and the Interpretive Centre is open on weekdays from 10am to 6pm. It has a collection of more than 1,000 artifacts, including arrowheads and Indian artifacts.
