Ripley

Ripley is a city in and the county seat of Jackson County, West Virginia, United States. The population was 3,074 at the 2020 census. The last public hanging in West Virginia took place in Ripley in 1897, when John Morgan was hanged for murder. The city is located at 38°4916N 81°4251W (38.821078, -81.714264), along Mill Creek. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 3.28 square miles (8.50 km²), of which 3.17 square miles of it is land and 0.11 sq miles (0.28 km²) is water. In 1832, the Starchers donated 8 acres (32,000 m2) of land to the county, 2 acres for the location of the county courthouse and jail, and six for the general use of the new county. The town was chartered by the Virginia General Assembly in 1832. The name was shortened in 1893 to Jackson. During the American Civil War, Ripley remained under the control of the Union except for a brief incursion by the Confederate General Albert G. Jenkins in September 1862. At the 2010 census, there were 3,252 people, 1,476 households and 854 families living in the city. The gender makeup of the city was 44.6% male and 55.4% female. The average household size was 2.12 and the average family size was2.81.

History

Ripley is the primary city name, but also Statts Mills are acceptable city names or spellings, Fairplain on the other hand no longer accepted or obsolete and are no longer used as a designation. The official name is Ripley, West Virginia. Ripley was originally owned and settled by William, John, and Lewis Rodgers. They received a grant of 400 acres (1.6 km²) in 1768 where "Sycamore Creek joins Big Mill Creek" The land was later sold to Jacob (and Ann) Starcher, most probably in 1803. Jacob Starcher erected a grist mill in 1824 and laid out the town in 1830, naming it in honor of Harry Ripley, a young minister who was to be married. The town was chartered by the Virginia General Assembly in 1832. The last public hanging in West Virginia took place in Ripley in 1897, when John Morgan was hanged for murder. It has a population of about 2,000. The county seat of Jackson County, West Virginia, was named Ripley after a young man who drowned in the creek shortly before his wedding to his fiancee. He was buried in the Ripley Cemetery.

It is the site of the Ripley High School, one of the oldest high schools in the United States. The Ripley School District was established in 1876. It was the first high school in the state, and the first in the nation, to open in 1878. The school was named for Ripley's founder, William "Bill" Ripley. The town's name is derived from the town's nickname, "Riply", which means "to run" or "run" in English. It has also been known as "Riptley" and "Rippley" in the Spanish language, and has been used as a name for the town of Ripley since the 19th century, when it was first established. It also has been called "Ripsley" by some locals, and is now known as the "City of Ripsley".

The city has a population density of 1,025.9 per square miles (396.1/ km²). It has a median age of 45 years, and the city's population density is 1,026.7 per squaremile (396-1/km 2). The city is located on the U.S.-Mexico border. It is the only city in the state of New Mexico that is not part of the Mexican state of Baja California or the Mexican province of Michoacán. It was the site of a World War II-era naval base, which was closed in the late 1950s and early 1960s. The U.N. has no plans to build a new base in the area, but plans to expand into the area in the future. The town's name is derived from the word "western", which means "western" or "densely populated". The city was founded in the 17th century.

Fourth of July celebration

Ripley claims to host the "Biggest Small Town Fourth of July Celebration" in the U.S. On 4 July 2002, then President George W. Bush gave a public speech at the town's courthouse. The town of Ripley has a population of 1,000 people. It is located in the eastern part of the state of Kansas.
