Mokena is a village in Will County, Illinois, United States. The population was 19,887 at the 2020 census. The Census Bureau's 2019 estimate found that the population had increased to 20,159. Mokena has two commuter rail stations, Hickory Creek and Front Creek, providing service to downtown Chicago's LaSalle Street Station. The village is served by four school districts and Joliet Junior College, the nation's first public community college. It is also served by I-80, which runs along its northern border with I-355, the main highway from Chicago to I-57. The town is located at 41°324N 87°5237W and has an area of 8.893 square miles (23.03 km²) (or 99.97%) of land, and 0.003 sq miles (0.01 km²), or 0.03% of the village, is water. In 2010, there were 18,740 people, 6,358 households, and 5,120 families residing in the village. As of the census of 2008, the median house value was $350,130, up from $211,300 in 2000. The median family income is $82,596 and the median income for a household is $91,817. In the 2010 census, the population was 94.5% White, 1.3% African American, 2.0% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander,0.9% from other races, and 4.8% from two or more races.

Etymology

Mokena is located at 41°324N 87°5237W. According to the 2010 census, Mokena has an area of 8.893 square miles (23.03 km²) It is bordered by Tinley Park, Orland Park, Homer Glen, Frankfort, and New Lenox. The name is apparently derived from a Native American language meaning "turtle" and likely candidates are Anishinaabemowin, whose word for "snapping turtle" is mikinaak, and its close sister language Potawatomi, in which the same animal is called mkenak. Both languages were once spoken in the area now occupied by the town. The town has a population of 2,816. It is located on the Illinois Turnpike, which runs through the town and into Illinois State Route 4. The Turnpix is a popular tourist destination. It was built in the early 1900s as a tourist destination for the Chicago area. The turnpike was built to connect the Illinois River with the Chicago River, which ran through the city. The Chicago River was once the main route between Chicago and Illinois. It has been converted into a highway since the 1950s. The Illinois TurnPix was built as a toll road in the 1960s and 1970s. It now runs along the Illinois-Illinois Turnpikes. The city is located in the Illinois State Highway 4 corridor. The highway runs between the towns of Orland park and Homer Glen. It also runs through Frankfort.

Mokena is in Mokena School District 159, New Lenox School District 122, Frankfort School District 157C, and Summit Hill School District 161. Schools within District 159 include MES, MIS, and MJHS. Lincoln-Way Community High School District 210 serves students living in districts 159 or 122. Joliet Junior College, the nation's first public community college, and Rasmussen College are also located in the city. The city is home to the Illinois State Museum, which was founded in 1883. The town is also the home of the Illinois National Guard, which has been stationed in the area since the early 20th century. It is the site of the state's only World War II-era military base, the Illinois Army National Guard Base, and the U.S. Army Air and Space Command. The Illinois State Police are based in the town, and have been stationed there since the late 1800s. The state's National Guard is based at the base since the mid-19th century, and has also been stationed at the Illinois Air and Air Force Base since the 1950s. It also has its own National Guard Air Force base, which is based in Springfield, Illinois, and is part of the National Guard Joint Reserve System. The U.N. Air Force has a base in the community, and a military base in Illinois State College, which also serves the town. It was the first public college in the United States; it was established in 1881.

Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.8% of the population. The population was spread out, with 32.4% under the age of 18, 7.1% from 18 to 24, 32.7% from 25 to 44, 21. 5% from 45 to 64, and 6.2% who were 65 years of age or older. For every 100 females age 18 and over,there were 97.3 males. The average household size was 3.10 and the average family size was3.46. The village has a population of 1,848 people, with a population density of 2,432.4 inhabitants per square mile (939.2/km²). The median age was 34.5 years, with every 100 women having a median age of 101.5 males.

Transportation

Mokena has two commuter rail stations, Hickory Creek and Front Street. Mokena is also served by I-80, which runs along its northern border. The main northsouth thoroughfares are US Route 45 (LaGrange Rd) and Wolf Rd. Rail freight traffic travels along both the Metra RI District Railway (Metra RI) and the Canadian National Railway (CN) The CN tracks approximately bisect the town in a northeastern/southwestern direction. The village is located on the Illinois River, which flows through the center of the town. The town is located in the Chicago Metropolitan Statistical Area (CMA), which covers parts of Cook, Lake, and Porter Counties. The CMA is the largest CMA in the United States, with more than 1.5 million people living in its service areas. It is the only CMA service area in the state of Illinois, with over 1.2 million people in the CMA's service areas alone. The population of the village is approximately 4,000. The Village is home to one of the largest concentrations of African-American residents in the U.S., making it one of only a handful of towns in the country with more African-Americans than Native Americans. It has a population of about 2,000 people, the majority of whom live in or near the village's downtown area. The majority of the population lives in or around the village, with the exception of a few hundred residents who live further south in the suburbs.
