It is 18 miles (29 km) southwest of the Loop. The population of Chicago Ridge was 14,127 in 2000, and is expected to rise to 14,433 by the end of the decade. The city of Chicago is located in the southwestern portion of Cook County, Illinois, about 20 miles (32 km) south of downtown Chicago. The area was first settled in the 1840s by German and Dutch farmers. In the 1850s, the Illinois & Michigan Canal reached from the Little Calumet River westward through the Saganash-kee Slough. The town was named after a member of one of the founding families of the Chicago Ridge area who won the Kentucky Derby in 1910.

History

Chicago Ridge takes its name from ridges left behind when trainloads of dirt were brought out by the Wabash Railroad during construction of the Columbian Exposition of 1893. The village has an area of approximately 2.2 square miles (5.7 km²) and is located in the southwestern portion of Cook County, Illinois, about 20 miles (32 km) southwest of downtown Chicago. The path of Stony Creek arcs through the village. It is not only an old creek but also the remnants of a feeder canal for the Illinois & Michigan Canal that reached from the Little Calumet River westward through the Saganash-kee Slough. In 1898, the Paul E. Berger Company, manufacturers of cash registers and slot machines, located adjacent to the railroad. The Berger Company built housing for its employees, and a settlement emerged around the factory, with a tavern, rooming house, and grocery store. Chicago Ridge grew from 176 in 1920 to 888 in 1950. Along with a strong new industrial and commercial base, the population increased dramatically, to 5,748 in 1960 and 14,127 in 2000. Local residents proudly recall that a member of one of the founding families of the Chicago Ridge area, Fred Herbert, won the Kentucky Derby in 1910. The racetrack was torn down in 1911 and is now the site of Holy Sepulchre Cemetery. The first post office opened in 1900 in the Berger factory, and in 1902 the W Abash Railroad established a train station.

The city's name is derived from the Chicago river, which was once known as the "Chicago River" and is now known as "The Illinois River" The village has a population of 1,816.5 (as of the 2011 census), and is located on the edge of the Chicago metropolitan area, about 18 miles from the city of Chicago. There were 5,989 housing units at an average density of 2,640.65 per square mile (1,019.56/km²) The racial makeup of the village was 72.54% White, 9.77% African American, 0.28% Native American, 2.33% Asian, 0,01% Pacific Islander, 6.55% from other races, and 8.53% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 15.64% of the population. The village's age distribution consisted of 22.6% under the age of 18, 5.3% from 18 to 24, 32. 3% from 25 to 44, 24.5% from 45 to 64, and 15.3%. The median age was 35.7 years. For every 100 females, there were 103.3 males. The median income for a family was $64,206. The per capita income for the village is $24,310. About 19.4% of families and 21.0% of residents were below the poverty line, including 8.9% of those age 65 or over. This table excludes Latinos from the racial categories and assigns them to a separate category. Hispanics/Latinos can be of anyrace. The US Census treats Hispanic/Latino as an ethnic category.

Government

Charles Polchow served as the first president of Chicago Ridge when it organized as a village in 1914. Charles and his wife, the former Luzina Zippel, arrived March 10, 1897, to Chicago Ridge. Their first home was a farmhouse at 107th near Oak Park Avenue, where their first four children were born. The Chicago Ridge Park District offers a "before/after" school care program. The Village President is the chief executive officer, and the Board of Trustees is the legislative body. Local elections are held every two years in the spring. Chicago Ridge is in Illinois's 3rd congressional district. The village is governed by a President and Board oftrustees. The President is elected four-year terms. The Board of trustees is made up of three men and three women. The current Village President, Eugene "Gene" Siegel, was elected as a Part-time Village President in 1975 and held the position until 1993. He was the longest serving Village President until he retired in 2013 making him the longest-serving Village President of Chicago ridge. The town is located in Worth Township and is located on the Illinois Turnpike at 103rd Street and Ridgeland Avenue. It is located near the Chicago River and the Illinois State Line. It has a population of 2,000. It was founded in 1914 and was named after the town's first president, Charles PolChow, who emigrated from Germany in 1897. The first village president was Charles Polchows, who died in 1951 at the age of 78.

Culture

The Chicago Ridge Park District has 23 acres (93,000 m2) of land available for recreational purposes. The district offers over 100 programs for residents of all ages. Chicago Ridge hosts the annual RidgeFest celebration the last weekend in July at Freedom Park. It is one of the best-known summer festivals in the southwest suburban Chicago area. It consistently draws large crowds from throughout the Chicago metropolitan area. The park district has nine parks containing tennis courts, baseball fields, a fitness center/gymnasium, and a newly completed miniature golf/batting cages complex. It also has a large outdoor theater complex with a capacity of over 1,000 people. In addition to the parks, the district offers a number of activities for children and adults, such as a swimming pool and a baseball diamond. It offers a variety of sports and activities for adults and children, including a bowling alley and a miniature golf complex. In the summer, the park district also hosts the RidgeFest festival, which is held in Freedom Park in the last week of July. The festival is known for drawing large crowds of people from across the Chicago area and beyond. It has been held for more than 30 years and draws thousands of people each year. It was founded in the early 1970s and is now one of Chicago's most popular summer festivals. It draws people from all over the U.S. and the world to Freedom Park every year.

Transportation

Chicago Ridge has a station on Metra's SouthWest Service, which provides daily rail service between Manhattan, Illinois, and Chicago Union Station. The Teen Center is operated by the Teen Center of Chicago Ridge, which was founded in the early 1990s. The library is open to the public on weekdays and on the weekend. It is open from 9am to 5pm. Notable person

Tim Pyznarski, first baseman for the San Diego Padres. James J. Konetski, DuPage County, Illinois, Circuit Court Judge. Tim Pyznarski is a former member of the San Francisco Giants. He is the son of former San Francisco Giant and former San Diego Giants first baseman Tim Pyzharski. He was born in San Diego, California, and grew up in DuPage, Illinois. He has a son, James, who is also a San Diego Giant and a DuPage Giants player. He also has a daughter, Sarah, who was born on September 11, 2010. He died on September 25, 2013, at the age of 69. He had been married for more than 30 years, and has two children. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Iraq War. He now lives in Illinois with his wife and two children, and works as a judge in the DuPage area. He's also a member of San Diego's San Diego County Board of Supervisors. He played for the Padres from 2002 to 2007. He retired from the Padres in 2007, and is now a judge for the county. He and his wife have a daughter and son-in-law, who lives in California. They have two sons, James Konetskis, a judge, and a grandson, who also plays in the Padres' minor league team, the San Antonio Missions. They also have two daughters, Sarah Konetskoski, who plays for the Chicago Cubs.
