History

Center City was platted in 1857, and named from its location near the geographic center. A post office was established as Centre City in 1858, and the name was changed to Center City in 1893. The city was named after the Center River, which runs through the city's center. It was named for the center of the city, which is located near the town's central business district. The town's name was first used as a place of business in the mid-1850s. The name was later changed to its current name, Center City, by the city council in the early 1900s.

The town's population was 2,081 at the 2010 United States Census, and 2,094 at the 2011 United States Census Bureau  Census Establishment. It has a latitude and longitude of 1.071 miles (2,074 km²), and a population density of 0,077.5 square miles(1,078.5 km²). It is the only city in the state of Wyoming that is not in the National Park Service. It was the site of the World War II Battle of the Bulge, and the Battle of St. Johns River, which is a tributary of the Little Piney River. It also was the location of the first settlement of the state, in 1851. The U.N. World Heritage Site, the U of W is located near the city, and was established in 1852.

Center City was the setting of Swedish author Vilhelm Moberg's epic novels The Emigrants, written and published in four volumes between 1949 and 1959. In the movie Grumpy Old Men, the church in the wedding scene is at Chisago Lake Lutheran Church in Center City. Center City was also the setting for two feature films made in 1972 and 1974, starring Tom Hanks and Robert De Niro, both of whom were born in the city in the 1950s and 1960s. The city is also featured in the TV series The Big City, which is based on the novel by the same name, and the film The Big House, which was made into a TV series in the 1970s and 1980s.
