Martinsburg is a city in and the seat of Berkeley County, West Virginia, in the tip of the state's Eastern Panhandle region in the lower Shenandoah Valley. Its population was 18,835 in the 2021 census estimate, making it the largest city in the Eastern Pan Handle and the sixth-largest municipality in the state. Aspen Hall, a Georgian mansion, is the oldest house in the city and part was built in 1745 by Edward Beeson, Sr. Significant events related to the French and Indian War, the Revolution, and the Civil War took place on the property. The first United States post office in what is now West Virginia was established at Martinsburg in 1792. In 1854, ten-year-old Isabelle Boyd, known as "Belle" and later a noted spy for the Confederacy, moved to Martinsberg with her family; where her father Benjamin operated a general merchandise store. In 1863, Belle was arrested by the Union Army and imprisoned. In 1992 it was purchased by the Berkeley County Historical Society. The historical society renovated the building and now operates it as thekeley County Museum. It is also known as the Belle Boyd House. The Apollo Theatre was completed in 1913. In 1889, electricity began to be furnished to the city as part of a franchise granted to the United Manufacturing Company of New York. The city was incorporated by an act of the West Virginia Legislature on July 30, 1868. The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Martinssburg Shops were constructed in 1849 and rebuilt after the American Civil War.

History

Martinsburg was established by an act of the Virginia General Assembly that was adopted in December 1778 during the American Revolutionary War. The first United States post office in what is now West Virginia was established at Martinsburg in 1792. The Great Railroad Strike of 1877 began July 14, 1877, in this city at the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Martinssburg Shops. In 1889, electricity began to be furnished to the United Edison Company of New York. The Apollo Civic Civic Theatre was completed in 1913. Over one thousand soldiers from Berkeley County participated in World War I (1,039) and twenty-one were wounded in battle. A monument to those who fell in battle in battle was erected in 1925. In 1946, this military hospital became a military hospital of the Veterans Administration (VA Veterans Administration) In this city, thousands of wounded soldiers were treated in the D.C. VA Hospital in Richmond, Virginia. The city is home to the Berkeley County Historical Society, which now operates the Belle Boyd House as a museum.

Geography

Martinsburg is located at 39°2733N 77°584W (39.459207, 77.967814). It is approximately 18 miles (29 km) southwest of Hagerstown, 73 miles (117 km) west of Baltimore, 63 miles (101 km) northwest of Washington, D.C., and 134 miles (216 km) east of Morgantown. U.S. Route 11 runs through the center of town, and Interstate 81 passes along the northern side of the town. The city has a total area of 6.67 square miles (17.28 km²), of which 6.65 square miles is land and 0.02 square mile (0.05 km²) is water. It is 212 miles (341 km) distant from the state capital of Charleston, but closer to Harrisburg PA, Annapolis MD, Dover DE, Richmond VA, and Trenton NJ. It lies in the transitional area between humid subtropical climate (Köppen Cfa) and humid continental climatic zones. It has four distinct seasons, with a January daily mean temperature of 32.4 °F (0.2 °C) and an average annual snowfall of 26.1 inches (66 cm) summers are hot and humid with a July daily mean Temperature of 75.7°F (24.3°C) and 27 days of 90 °C (32 °C+) readings annually. Extreme temperatures at Eastern West Virginia Regional Airport range from 18 °F on January 21, 1994, up to 112 °C on July 11, 1936; an even colder 19 °C was recorded in the city on January 14, 1912.

Demographics

As of the census of 2020, there were 18,777 people residing in the city, living in 7,179 total households. The median household income (in 2019 dollars) was $42,835. The per capita income was $24,970. 88.5% of households had a computer, with 77.9% having access to broadband internet. The racial makeup of the city was 79.9%, with 3.1% two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 4.8% of the population. The city has a population of 14,972, with 7,432 housing units. The population was 77.5%, with 2.7% Asian, 0.3% Pacific Islander, and 2.2% from other races. In 2010, 17,227 people, 7,293 households, and 4,106 families were living in the City. The average household size was 2.21, and the average family size was 3.00. The City has a median age of 37 years, with the average population of 37.4 years. The U.S. Census Bureau estimates the city's population is 14,777, with 6,684 households. It has a poverty rate of 29.5%. The city is home to one of the largest concentrations of African Americans in the United States. It is also home to the largest concentration of Native Americans in North America, with 1.4% of its population living in Native American.

Commerce

Major private employers in and around Martinsburg include Quad/Graphics, Ecolab, Orgill, Macy's, and FedEx. In February 2015, it was announced that Procter & Gamble planned to build a $500 million facility near the city. The city also has numerous federal government employers, including the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), U.S. Coast Guard National Maritime Center, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives. The area is also home to the 167th Airlift Wing of the West Virginia Air National Guard, based in Eastern WV Regional Airport.Martinsburg had its own automobile company from 1912 to 1922, called Norwalk, which assembled the longest-made known cars to be built in the state of West Virginia. The IRS Facility processes most of the country's electronically filed tax documents from businesses, and about one-third of electronically filed returns. The Martinsberg VA Medical Center is one of the two Enterprise Computing Centers of the IRS (the other is in Memphis, Tennessee). The city is home to a number of military bases, including West Virginia Army National Guard outposts and the Virginia Army and Marine Corps Air Station, which is based in the town of Morgantown. It is also the home of the National Guard's C5ISC-Kearneysville, which processes the majority of electronic tax returns in the United States. The town has a population of about 3,000. It was the site of the World War I Battle of the Bulge, which was fought from 1871 to 1883.

Sports

Hack Wilson played for the Martinsburg Blue Sox, a low-level minor-league baseball team. Wilson would go on to set the yet-to-be-broken major league record for RBI in a season (191) with the Chicago Cubs in 1930. He later moved to Baltimore in 1941 where he later died November 23, 1948. Originally scheduled to be interred in Baltimore, Wilson was buried in a donated plot in Martinsberg, Pennsylvania. He was buried in a plot donated by the town's Chamber of Commerce, which was established in his honor in the 1930s. He is survived by his wife, two children and a son-in-law. He died in Baltimore in 1948; he is buried in Baltimore's Mount Calvary Cemetery, where he was buried with his wife and two children in the town of Martinburg, Pennsylvania, on November 24, 1948, at the age of 80. He also had a son, Jack, who was a professional baseball player and a pool hall owner in the same town. He had a daughter, Barbara, who is now a professional pool player and owner of her own pool hall in the city of Martinsburger, North Carolina. She is also buried in Martinsburg, South Carolina, where she is buried with her father-in law, Jack. She died in 2007 at age 80 and is buried at the same place as her father, in the town of Martinburg.

Berkeley Medical Center (formerly WVUH-East City Hospital and City Hospital)Veterans Affairs Medical Center is located in Berkeley, West Virginia. Berkeley Medical Center was founded in 1903 and is the oldest hospital in the state. It was named after the city of Berkeley, where it was founded. Amtrak provides service to Martinsburg on its Washington-Chicago Capitol Limited route. MARC, Maryland's commuter rail system, operates trains on weekdays on its Brunswick Line. Service is provided to Union Station in Washington, D.C. The closest airport with commercial air service is Hagerstown Regional Airport, that is about 25 miles (40 km) driving distance north.
