Owings Mills is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in Baltimore County, Maryland, United States. Per the 2020 census, the population was 35,674. It is home to the northern terminus of the Baltimore Metro Subway, and housed the Owings Mills Mall until its closure in 2015. In 2008, CNNMoney.com named Owing Mills number 49 of the "100 Best Places to Live and Launch". It is located at 39°2444N 76°4735W (39.412282, 76.793065).According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 9.6 square miles (25 km²), all land. The Soldiers Delight Natural Environment Area is in the OwINGS Mills area. This site and the Bare Hills District have historically been sources of chromium ore, and during the 19th century they were the largest producers of chrome in the world. In the 2010 census of 2010, there were 30,622 people and 12,525 households in theCDP. The racial makeup of the C DP was 34.3% White, 51.0% African American, 7.8% Asian, 0.1% Native Hawaiian or other Pacific Islander, 3.3%. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 7.0%. The median income for a household in the CDM was $53,424, and the median family income was $61,079. About 4.6% of families and 5.9% of the population were below the poverty line.

It is the most populous CDP in the state, with a population increase of 1.4% from 2000 to 2010. The town has a median household income of $28,000, up from $26,000 in 2000. The city's population has grown by 1.3% since the 2000 Census, to 2,100 people. It has an estimated population of 2,300 people, up 1.2% from the 2010 Census. The population has increased by 1,000 people since the 1990 Census. It had a population loss of 1,200 people in the 1990s, down from 2,500 in 2000, to 1,100 in 2010. It was the first CDP to grow at a rate of more than 1% per year since the mid-1990s. The community has a history of racial and ethnic diversity. The majority of its residents are African-American, with the exception of a few white residents. It also has a large Hispanic population.

Geology

The Soldiers Delight Natural Environment Area is in the Owings Mills area. It is a serpentinite barren fostering a unique ecosystem as a result of the dissolution of the rock into an easily eroded thin soil. This site and the Bare Hills District have historically been sources of chromium ore, and during the 19th century they were the largest producers of chrome in the world. The area is home to a number of endangered species, including a rare species of ground-dwelling tree called the Soldier's Daughters. The Soldiers Del delight Natural Environment area is located in Maryland, near the town of Owings, in the U.S. state of Maryland. It has a population of around 2,000 people. Education

Owings Mills is served by the Baltimore County Public Schools system. Schools include New Town Elementary, Owings Mills Elementary, Lyons Mill Elementary, Timber Grove Elementary in adjacent Reisterstown, Glyndon Elementary, Deer Park Middle Magnet. There are also several private schools in the area, including McDonogh School, a Pre-K12 school and Garrison Forest School. Stevenson University (formerly Villa Julie College), opened its Owings Mill campus in 2004, an addition to its original Stevenson campus nearby to the east. The town is home to a satellite branch of the three campuses of the Community College of Baltimore County system (CCBC) (Dundalk, Essex and Catonsville) and a branch ofthe ITT Technical Institute. It is also home to the Baltimore Ravens, Baltimore Ravens minor league baseball team, and Baltimore Ravens expansion team, the Baltimore Terrapins. The Baltimore Ravens won the Super Bowl in 2008. The Ravens also won the World Series in 2008, 2008, 2010, and 2012. The Orioles won the Stanley Cup in 2008 and 2012, and the Superbowl in 2010. The team won the Lombardi Award for Outstanding Team of the Year in 2010 and 2011, as well as the Lombard Award for Best Team in 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2015. In 2012, the Ravens won their fifth consecutive Super Bowl, beating off a challenge from archrivals Baltimore City and Washington, D.C. to take the title. In 2013, the Orioles won their sixth straight Super Bowl title, beating out the Wizards.

Transportation

Owings Mills station, the northwestern terminus of the Baltimore Metro Subway, is on Painters Mills Road, very close to the mall. There is also public bus service available on Maryland Transit Administration bus route nos. 87 and 89. Some of the major roads in the Owings Mills area are: Bonita Avenue, Caves Road, Dolfield Road, Marriottsville Road, Lakeside Boulevard, Reisterstown Road, Red Run Boulevard, and Park Heights Avenue. The area is home to the Baltimore Ravens football team, Baltimore Ravens basketball team, and Baltimore Ravens baseball team. The Baltimore Ravens play their home games at the Baltimore Maryland Stadium, which is located on the edge of the city. The Ravens also have a baseball team, the Baltimore Bullets, which plays their home game at the Maryland Stadium on the other side of the stadium. The team also has a football team called the Baltimore Orioles, which also plays its home games on the stadium's grounds. The Orioles also have an ice hockey team, nicknamed the Bullets, that plays their games at Baltimore's Harbor Point ice rink. The Maryland Ravens also play at the Harbor Point Ice Arena, which was built in the 1960s and 1970s as part of the Maryland Harbor extension of the Eastern Seaboard. The stadium is located in the Baltimore suburb of Baltimore, near the Inner Harbor and the Baltimore Beltway. The Owings Hills High School football team plays its games at Harbor Point, which lies near the Baltimore Inner Harbor, on the Maryland Beltway and the East River.

Attractions and facilities

Owings Mills is home to approximately a dozen major shopping centers and numerous office buildings. The abandoned Rosewood Center, a former asylum for people with mental disabilities, is in Owings Mills. CareFirst, T. Rowe Price, Lion Brothers, The Baltimore Life Companies, Talbot Settlement & Escrow, Black & Decker, the Baltimore Ravens headquarters facility, and Maryland Public Television studios (formerly the Maryland Center for Public Broadcasting) are all located in the area. The Irvine Nature Center moved to a property here, in the Caves Valley Historic District, in 2008. It is also within walking distance to the Metro Centre, which holds the northern most stop on the Baltimore Metro, along with restaurants and shopping. The former mall has since been redeveloped into Mill Station, which is a 620,000 sq ft retail devolpment. The first retailer to open its doors in the new Mill Station was Costco, who hosted their ribbon cutting ceremony in October 2018. As of February 2021, Mill Station will be home to Costco, Lowe's Giant, HomeSense, AMC, and more. Stevenson University acquired Rosewood in 2017 and finalized an agreement with the State of Maryland in September 2020 for the redevelopment of the site for their addition to the campus. The development is expected to take 18 months, and as of December 2020 has been continuing as scheduled despite the COVID-19 pandemic. It was used as a training location for the Maryland state police until 2013, when a police officer in training was shot and killed during training.

In media and popular culture

The TV program Wall $treet Week with Louis Rukeyser was produced by Maryland Public Television at its studios in Owings Mills during its original run from 1972 to 2005. Many viewers became familiar with the town as the program's mailing address. It is also the mailing address of the still-running weekly automotive series MotorWeek since 1981. Local roads can often be seen on the program. Rosewood Center is the location for the film The Institute. It was also the location of the filming of the TV series The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet in the 1970s and 1980s. The town is located on the Maryland Turnpike, which was built in the early 1900s.
