The first people to settle in the Eugene area were known as the Kalapuyans, also written Calapooia or Calapooya. In the 1800s their traditional way of life faced significant changes due to devastating epidemics and settlement, first by French fur traders and later by an overwhelming number of American settlers. The first major educational institution in the area was Columbia College, founded a few years earlier than the University of Oregon. Eugene was incorporated as a city in 1862, it was simply named Eugene in 1889, and it was named after Eugene Franklin Skinner, after whom Eugene is named. It is now known as Butte's Butte, but it was known by the time the settlement was established as an official post office as Anglos' Mudhole's Mudhole in 1853. It fell victim to two major fires in four years, the second of which was a major fire in 1858. It was relocated in 1859 and named Eugene City after the city's first post office, which was moved to the site of the present-day Butte College in 1881. The city's name was changed to Eugene in 1883, and the city was officially incorporated as Eugene in 1862. The Eugene area was known as Chifin, sometimes recorded as "Chafin" or "Chiffin" by the locals. Other Kalapuyan tribes occupied villages that are also now within Eugene city limits, including the Pee-you or Mohawk Kalapooians, Winefelly and the Lungtum.
