Henderson

Henderson is a city in Clark County, Nevada, United States, about 16 miles (26 km) southeast of downtown Las Vegas. It is the second largest city in Nevada, after Las Vegas, with an estimated population of 320,189 in 2019. Henderson is known for its supply of magnesium during World War II. With the decline of magnesium production, the Nevada legislature approved a bill that gave Nevada's Colorado River Commission the authority to purchase the industrial plants. In 1988, the Pacific Engineering and Production Company of Nevada (PEPCON) rocket fuel factory, in the modern-day Gibson Springs neighborhood of Henderson, caught fire. The blaze quickly engulfed the factory, spewing rocket fuel, smoke, and toxic fumes from the building, eventually obliterating it in a massive explosion, followed by six smaller explosions. Two people were killed and 372 were injured. The events of the PEPCON factory disaster spurred development in Henderson years later, from its historical industrial development to residential and commercial development. The city is in the Mojave Desert with typical vegetation and wildlife. The only water in the city is found in Duck Creek; the only water found in Henderson was found in Black Mountain Creek. The mountains that surround Henderson are mostly gentle slopes; most of this range is covered by black volcanic rocks from a volcanic explosion millions of years ago. These mountains reach an average height of about 3,800 feet (1,200 m) Henderson is the location of Lake Las Vegas; it has a total area of 107.7 square miles (279.0 km²).

History

Henderson is the primary city name, but also Las Vegas are acceptable city names or spellings. The official name is City of Henderson. Henderson was the main supplier of magnesium in the United States during World War II. In 1947, magnesium production was no longer necessary for defense, and most of the Black Mountain Industrial (BMI) Complex's 14,000 employees moved away. In 1988, the Pacific Engineering and Production Company of Nevada (PEPCON) rocket fuel factory, in the modern-day Gibson Springs neighborhood of Henderson, caught fire. The blaze quickly engulfed the factory, spewing rocket fuel, smoke, and toxic fumes from the building, eventually obliterating it in a massive explosion, followed by six smaller explosions. Smoke was seen from 100 miles (160 km) away, and two major blasts measured 3.0 and 3.5 on the Richter magnitude scale at observatories in California and Colorado. Two people were killed and 372 were injured. There are now no signs of the explosion where it happened. Today, the site consists mostly of office buildings. Henderson was incorporated on April 16, 1953 as the City of Henderson. On May 23, 1953, Henderson, with its population of 7,410, elected Dr. Jim French as the first mayor. Originally only about 13 square miles (34 km²) in size, the city quickly began to grow, reaching over 94square miles (240 km²] in size today. The events of the PEPCON factory disaster spurred development in Henderson years later, from its historical industrial development to residential and commercial development. The city is located on the Colorado River.

Geography

Henderson is about 16 miles (26 km) southeast of downtown Las Vegas at 36°223N 114°5852W (36.03972, 114.98111). The city has a total area of 107.7 square miles (279.0 km²), all land. The only water in the city is found in washes like Duck Creek. The McCullough Range is closest to the city; most of this range is covered by black rocks from a volcanic explosion millions of years ago. The hottest month is July and the coldest month is December. On average there are 292 clear days per year in Henderson. The city is classified as having a hot desert climate (BWh) in the Köppen climate classification. It has mild winters and hot summers. Snow can occasionally fall in the winter. The monsoon can bring storms in the summer, which can cause flash flooding and thunderstorms. There is no water supply in Henderson, but the city does have a well-oxygenated drinking water supply. It is located in the Mojave Desert with wildlife and vegetation typical of the desert. The mountains that surround Henderson mostly have gentle slopes. These mountains reach an average height of about 3,800 feet (1,200 m). The landscape consists of desert; the only water is in the washes of Duck Creek, which is about 20 miles (30 km) south of the city. The highest point in Henderson is the Fountains, which has an average of 3,000 feet (900 m).

Demographics

At the census of 2010, 257,729 people resided in Henderson. According to the 2000 census, there were 175,381 people, 66,331 households, and 47,095 families residing in the city. The city's median household income was $63,830. The per capita income for the city was $33,238. The Henderson zip code 89012 where MacDonald Highlands is located, has the 7th highest per-capita income in the United States at $148,899. The racial makeup was 76.9% White, 5.1% African American, 0.7% Native American, 7.2% Asian,0.6% Pacific Islander, and 4.8% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 13.71% of the population. The average household size was 2.63 and the average family size was 3.05. In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.1 per cent under the age of 18, 32.5% from 25 to 44, 24.4% from 45 to 64, and 10.1per cent who were 65 years of age or older. For every 100 females age 18 and over,there were 96.4 males. The median age for the City was 36 years, and for every 100 Females age 18 or over, there was 98.4 per cent males. About 3.9 per cent of families and 5.6 per cent were below the poverty line, including 6.4 percent of those under age 18.

In July 2020, Amazon announced the opening of a new, 600,000 square feet (56,000 m2) facility in Henderson. The top employers in Henderson are the City of Las Vegas and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, which both employ more than 100 people. In Henderson, the city has the highest percentage of residents who live in the state of Nevada and the lowest percentage of those who live outside of the state. The state's unemployment rate is 3.9%. The city has a high rate of unemployment of 2.7%. The state has the lowest unemployment rate in the United States, which is 1.8%. The highest rate in Nevada is the U.S., which is 2.1%. The U.N. has a low unemployment rate of 1.6%. The United States has the second highest unemployment rate, the lowest rate in Europe, at 1.4%. Culture and entertainment

Henderson has more than 37 miles (60 km) of trails. "Shakespeare in the Park" celebrated its tenth anniversary in 1996. The city supports a variety of other cultural events, many of which are held at the outdoor amphitheater. A scene in the James Bond film Diamonds Are Forever in which Bond (Sean Connery) is nearly cremated alive was filmed at Palm Mortuary's Henderson location. The construction office for the Lake Mead to Las Vegas water pipeline was there during the building of the pipeline and the filming of the movie. The 1998 film Lethal Weapon 4 used Interstate 215 as a filming location. America's Sweethearts, starring Julia Roberts and John Cusack, featured many scenes filmed at Lake Las Vegas. The Henderson Police Department (HPD) Crime Scene Analysts/Investigators. are the city's crime scene analysts. The City of Henderson is located a few miles southeast of Las Vegas and is not too far from the world-famous Las Vegas Strip. It is home to the largest recreational facility the Multigenerational Facility at Liberty Pointe in Nevada as well as Nevada's only scenic Bird Preserve. It also boasts the largest one of its kind in Nevada, the Amphitheater atLiberty Pointe, which is the largest outdoor theater in the state. It was built in the 1960s and is located on the banks of Lake Mead, which was once the largest lake in the United States. It has a population of more than 2,000.

Government

Henderson received its charter from the Nevada State Legislature in 1953. A mayor and four council members are elected citywide, but no more than one council member are allowed to reside in each ward. The city agreed to provide sign language interpreters, usually within an hour of a person's request to law enforcement officers. Henderson also agreed to modify its handcuffing policies for people who use sign language or hand writing to communicate. Under the settlement, the city of Henderson will pay $35,000 to the complainants. In 2013, the Department of Justice (DOJ) announced it had reached a cooperative settlement agreement with theCity of Henderson under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) The settlement was reached after the DOJ received complaints by individuals who are deaf that officers for the city did not provide them with qualified sign language interpreter services when needed for effective communication. One of the complainant was arrested and detained for two days in the Henderson detention facility, while the other was an alleged crime victim. The DOJ inquired whether the city would be interested in resolving the matter voluntarily, and the city expressed its full commitment to ensure compliance with the ADA. It agreed to adopt other policies consistent with theADA. The settlement is expected to be completed by the end of the year, and will be paid in full by the City of Henderson and the DOJ. In the end, the settlement is estimated to cost the city around $40,000, or about $25,000 per complainant. It is expected that the city will pay out about $30,000.

Education

Henderson is the location for 29 elementary schools, nine middle schools, and nine high schools. The Clark County School District provides elementary and secondary public education. Nevada State College, a baccalaureate college in the Nevada System of Higher Education, is in Henderson. The Roseman University of Health Sciences, a private university which awards degrees in nursing, pharmacy, and business, is also in the city. Henderson International School is a private preparatory school owned by Meritas. Findlay College Prep was a high school basketball program sponsored by the Henderson International school. The College of Southern Nevada, a community college based in Las Vegas, maintains a branch campus in Henderson, along with Touro University Nevada and Devry University. The International Academy of Design & Technology is a for-profit college. The Art Institute of Las Vegas and Everest College also operate in the area. Henderson has a public library, the Henderson District Public Libraries. It is also home to the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNV), which has a campus in the unincorporated Clark County (Paradise) section of Henderson. It also has a private school, Henderson International, which was founded by businessman Cliff Findlay in 2006. It has had several McDonald's All-Americans and alumni playing in the National Basketball Association (NBA). It is home to several colleges and universities, including Nevada State college and the Roseman university of health sciences, as well as several for-profits, such as The Art Academy of design & technology.

Sports

Henderson is home to the headquarters of the Las Vegas Raiders. The Henderson Silver Knights of the American Hockey League play in a 6,000-seat arena. In February 2021, ground was broken for a Aces facility next to the Raiders facility. The 50,000 square foot facility will house the Aces practice facility, offices, training room, weight room, hydrotherapy space, physical therapy area, locker rooms, a lecture hall, player and alumni lounges, and an on-site day care center. It is expected to be completed by March 2023. The arena is also home to Vegas Knight Hawks of the Indoor Football League, and the NBA G League Ignite of theNBA G League. The Las Vegas Aces of the Women's National Basketball Association will play in the Dollar Loan Center in Henderson. The Aces are a member of the WNBA's developmental league, the WNBA Developmental League, which is based in Las Vegas, Nevada. The Silver Knights are a minor league hockey team that plays in the American League of Professional Hockey, the AHL's feeder league for the National Hockey League. They are also part of the Arena Football League's Las Vegas SuperSonics, which has a team based in the same city as the Raiders, the Vegas Golden Knights and the Vegas Wranglers. They play in an arena that was built for the NFL's Raiders in the 1970s and 1980s. The Raiders moved to Las Vegas for the 2020 NFL season in time for the season.
