Hopkins is a small suburban city in Hennepin County, Minnesota, located west of Minneapolis. The city is four square miles in size and is surrounded by the larger suburban communities of Minnetonka, Saint Louis Park, and Edina. U.S. Highway 169 and Minnesota State Highway 7 are two of the main routes in the area. Hopkins was the headquarters of Minneapolis-Moline, which was a large manufacturer of tractors and agricultural equipment in the United States until the 1960s. The southern end of town sits along the main line of the Twin Cities and Western Railroad. The main street of Hopkins was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2022. The population was 19,079 at the 2020 census, and is expected to rise to 19,000 by the end of the decade. The median age in the city was 34.4 years; 21.1% of residents were under the age of 18; 8.4% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 34.3% were from 25 to 44; 23.4%. The city has a total area of 4.11 square miles (10.64 km²), of which 4.08 square miles of it is land and 0.03 sq miles (0.08 km²) is water. There are several small ponds on the western side of Hopkins, and creeks to the north and south. The north branch of Nine Mile Creek has its headwaters in Hopkins at the intersection of 13th Avenue South.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.11 square miles (10.64 km²) of which 4.08 square miles is land. The north branch of Nine Mile Creek has its headwaters in Hopkins at the intersection of 13th Avenue South and Excelsior Boulevard. The city is located on the banks of the Minnehaha River, which is a tributary of the Mississippi River. It is also on the shores of several small lakes, which are also part of the city's drainage system. It has a population of 2,856. The population of Hopkins was 2,788 at the 2010 census. It was the first city in the state to reach 3,000 in the 20th century, and the second to reach 4,000 by the mid-20th century. In the early 1900s, Hopkins was the site of the first recorded African-American settlement in the United States. The first African-Americans to live in the city were born in the late 1800s and early 1800s. The current population is 2,638. The U.N. World Heritage Site is in the town of Hopkins. It also has a small airport, which was built in the early 20th Century. The airport is located at the junction of two major roads, 13th Ave South and 13th St.

Government
Hopkins government structure is set by its city charter. The council controls city administration but does so exclusively through the city manager. The mayor is paid $6,000 per year and council members are paid $4,600 per year. Hopkins has seven departments, each with a department head that reports to the city managers. The city manager can create city departments and divisions and alter them when necessary. It requires the city to have a clerk, who is subordinate to theCity manager, and allows for, but doesn't require, a city attorney to advise the council on legal matters. The charter has been amended numerous times since then, most recently in October 2012. The current salaries were set in 1998, and the mayor serves a two-year term in office. The position of mayor is also the head of the city for ceremonial purposes, serving legal processes and martial law. It is a non-partisan position, with the mayor voting on all motions before the council like the council members. It has a mayor and four council members elected at-large, with two of the seats on the ballot in one election and the other two seats up in the following election. It also has a city manager, who serves an indefinite period and can be removed at any time. It does not have a mayor or council member elected for more than two years at a time, but it does have a city council member who is elected for a four-year terms. History
The first non-indigenous settlers of Hopkins arrived in 1852 as land around the growing MinneapolisSaint Paul area was opening up. The roots of the town begin in 1887 with the building of the Minneapolis Threshing Machine Company, later called Minneapolis-Moline. In 1928, the name of the village was changed to Hopkins after Harley H. Hopkins, who was among its first homesteaders and was the community's first postmaster. On January 1, 1948, the village became the city of Hopkins. The main street of Hopkins, from 8th to 11th avenues, was officially listed on the National Register of Historic Places in January, 2022. The Hopkins Raspberry Festival was founded in 1935 as a way to boost business during the Great Depression of the 1930s. The festival now takes place the third weekend in July every year. Since its inception, it has evolved into a dynamic community celebration with activities including music, sporting events, royalty coronations, craft fair, and parade. It is overseen by a board of directors supported by many additional volunteers and local civic organizations each year. The first school, Burnes, was built in 1862. In 1887, the West Minneapolis Land Company was founded and formed to build housing for the Minneapolis Moline factory workers. The original village consisted of about three square miles, and it has been enlarged by annexation to its present size of about four square miles. The name "Hopkins" was given to the town by people getting off the train and it stuck.
Education
The Hopkins School District serves all or parts of seven Minneapolis west suburban communities: Hopkins, Minnetonka, Golden Valley, Plymouth, Edina, Eden Prairie, and Saint Louis Park. Approximately 8,100 students attend seven elementary schools, two junior high schools (7th9th grade), and one high school (10th12th grade) Some students attend public schools in other school districts chosen by their families under Minnesota's open enrollment statute, as some students from outside Hopkins enroll in Hopkins schools on that basis. There are two private schools in Hopkins: The Blake School and Agamim Classical Academy. There is also a charter high school called Mainstreet School of Performing Arts (MSSPA), which focuses on the three major performing arts areas; music, dance and theater. The school was chartered in 2003 and was previously housed in Minneapolis. It is currently leasing space in the Katherine Curren Elementary building. It was originally called Performing Institute of Minnesota Arts High School (PiM Arts High school). Grades 912 to 914. It opened in 2004 and eventually moved to Eden prairie, MN being renamed to Per performing Institute ofMinnesota Arts High Schools. It currently has a student population of about 2,000. It has an enrollment of about 8,000 students. It also has a staff of about 1,200 students. The school has a budget of about $1.2 million for the 2014-15 school year. It will have a student enrollment of around 2,500 students.
