Dundalk

Dundalk is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in Baltimore County, Maryland, United States. The population was 67,796 at the 2020 census. It was named after the town of Dundalk, Ireland. Dundalk was once known as a "Little Appalachia" or a "hillbilly ghetto" before, during, and after World War II many Appalachian migrants settled in the Baltimore area. The Dundalk Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. It is part of the Atlantic Coastal Plain, with a few small hills close to the city of Baltimore to the west. The area was first explored by John Smith in 1608, and was once occupied by the tribes of the Susquehannock. In 1960 and 1970, Dundalks was the largest unincorporated community in Maryland. In the 2010 census, there were about 63,597 people in Dundalk. The racial makeup of the CDP was about 79.9% white, 13.0% American, 3% Hispanic, 10% Asian, and 3.1% all other. The average household size was 2.50 people, and the average family size was 1.98 people, with the average age being 29.2 years old. The town is located on the shore of the Chesapeake Bay, about 40 feet (12 m) above sea level. It has a total area of 17.4 square miles (45.0 km²), of which 13.1 sq miles (33.8 km²) is land and 4.3sq miles (11.2 km 2) is water.

History

Dundalk is the primary city name, but also Baltimore are acceptable city names or spellings. The official name is Dundalk, Maryland. Dundalk was once known as a "Little Appalachia" or a "hillbilly ghetto" Many Appalachian migrants settled in the Baltimore area, including Dundalk. The Dundalk Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. The area now known as Dundalk was first explored by John Smith in 1608. In 1916 the Bethlehem Steel purchased 1,000 acres (4.0 km²) of farmland, near the McShane foundry, to develop housing for its shipyard workers. By 1917 Dundalk proper was founded, at which point it had 62 houses, two stores, a post office, and a telephone exchange. The two-story houses had steeply pitched roofs and stucco exteriors. As the demand for steel increased rapidly during World War 1, white workers streamed into Dundalk, pushing black workers into a small community nearby named Turner Station. During World War II, Turner Station expanded even more as demand forsteel increased even more. In 1977 the foundry moved to its current location in Glen Burnie, Maryland. The foundry later relocated to the Patterson Park area of Baltimore until a fire during the 1940s caused it to move to 201 East Federal Street in the late 1960s. In the 1990s, the Dundalk Company was formed to plan a town in the new style, similar to that of the Roland Park Area of Baltimore, excluding businesses except at specific spots and leaving land for future development of schools, playing fields, and parks.

Geography

Most of Dundalk is flat and very near sea level, with a few small hills close to the city of Baltimore to the west. Elevations range from sea level on the shore of the Chesapeake Bay to approximately 40 feet (12 m) above sea level along the northern reaches of Dundalks Avenue and North Point Boulevard. Bread and Cheese Creek is a tributary of the Back River in Dundalk. The creek is 8.5 miles (13.7 km) long, with headwaters in Baltimore City. The watershed area of the creek is 1.85 square miles (4.8 km²). The CDP has a total area of 17.4 square years (45.0 km²) of which 13.1 square miles is land and 4.3 square miles, or 24.84%, is water. It is part of the Atlantic Coastal Plain and is located in the Baltimore-Washington Metropolitan Statistical Area, which includes Baltimore, Washington, D.C., Frederick, and Anne Arundel Counties. It has a population of 1,071 (1,081 in the U.S. Census Bureau's latest count). It is located on the eastern edge of the Baltimore metropolitan area, near the border with Frederick County, and the western edge of Baltimore County. The town has a post office with a ZIP code of 7054. It also has a public library with a branch in downtown Baltimore, which has a ZIPcode of 7064.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were about 63,597 people. The racial makeup of Dundalk was about 79.9% white. The median income for a household in the CDP was $39,789. About 6.6% of families and 9.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 13.3% of those under age 18 and 6.9%. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was2.98. The population was spread out, with 23.9 per cent under the age of 18, 7.4 per cent from 18 to 24, 28.4% from 25 to 44, 22.6 per cent between 45 and 64, and 17.7 per cent who were 65 years of age or older. For every 100 females, there are 91.3 males. For each 100 females age 18 or over, there there are 87.4 males. The average age of a Dundalk resident is 39 years old, and the median age is 39.5 years old. There are about 24,772 households, out of which 29.2 per cent have children under 18 living with them, 46.5% were married couples living together, 16.1 per cent had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.5 per cent were non-families. There were about 13,000 homes, with the average house size being 2.98, and a median age of 39.4 years.

Transportation

Public transportation between Sparrows Point, Dundalk and Baltimore City was operated by the United Railways and Electric Company's (later the Baltimore Transit Company) #26 streetcar line. Until the early 1950s, the line carried the famous "Red Rocket" streetcars which were two and three car trains of wooden trolleys. Between 1940 and 1972, bus service in the Dundalk area was provided by Dundalk Bus Lines.Today, public transportation is provided by the Maryland Transit Administration. MTA lines that serve the area are CityLink Blue, CityLink Navy, City Link Orange, LocalLink 59, Local Link 62, Locallink 63, Express BusLink 163 and LocalLink 65. Some of the major roads in Dundalk are:Dundalk Avenue, Eastern Avenue, Holabird Avenue, North Point Boulevard, and North Point Road. The area is home to the Baltimore Ravens football team, Baltimore Ravens basketball team, and Baltimore Ravens baseball team. The Baltimore Ravens play their home games in Baltimore's Oriole Park at Camden Yards. The Ravens also have a baseball team, the Baltimore Bullets, which plays its home games at the Maryland Stadium at Baltimore and Baltimore International Airport. The Orioles also play in the NFL's Baltimore Ravens franchise, Baltimore City FC. The team's home field is Baltimore City Stadium at the Baltimore and Maryland International Airport, which is located in the Baltimore suburb of Baltimore. The Bullets' home game against the Ravens is the Baltimore Colts on Sunday, April 22, 2014.

Education

Dundalk contains a campus of the Community College of Baltimore County. It was formerly known as Dundalk Community College. For primary and secondary education Dundalk is served by the Baltimore County Public Schools system. Dundalk High School, Patapsco High School and Sparrows Point High School are the major high schools to serve the area. Sollers Point Technical High School is one of the only high schools in the country to hold an ISO 9001 certification. The area is also home to the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, which has a campus in Dundalk. It is the only university in the area to have a degree program that is accredited by the American Association of Colleges and Schools (AACS). The school is also the only one in the United States to be certified by the International Institute of Standards and Technology (IS&T), which is a member of the Association of American Colleges and Universities (AAUC). It was founded in 1903 and is the oldest college in the state of Maryland. The school was founded by the founder of the American College and University of Baltimore (ACU) in 1903. The campus is known as CCBC-DundALK and is located in the city's downtown area. The city is home to a number of high schools, including Dundalk Elementary, Dundalk Middle, and Dundalk Senior High. It also has a high school that is part of the Baltimore City Public School System, which serves the area in the form of Dundalk Junior/Senior High.

Dundalk is under jurisdiction of Baltimore County Police Department, Dundalk (Precinct 12), which is located at 428 Westham Way. There are multiple fire stations serving within the Dundalk area. Dundalk is located in Baltimore County, Maryland, United States. It is located on the Baltimore River, which runs through the center of the city. The city is home to the University of Maryland, Baltimore, which was founded in 1864. The University of Baltimore is a member of the Baltimore City College of Science and Technology, a division of the College of Arts and Humanities. The Baltimore City Police Department is based in Dundalk and serves the city of Dundalk. The Dundalk Police Department was established in 1868 and is part of the City of Baltimore Police and Fire Department, which is under the jurisdiction of the County of Baltimore. It was established as a part of Baltimore City in 1881. The first police station was opened in 1883 and was called Dundalk Station 6. The fire station was called Edgemere Station 9 in 1891. The station is now called North Point-Edgemere Vol. Station 26 in 1894. There is also a fire station called Eastview Station 15 in 1892 and a station called Sparrows Point Station 57 in 1893. The town has a number of other fire stations, including Dundalk Vol. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, and 9.

Support organizations

Dundalk Renaissance Corporation is a community development corporation. Living With Grace is a nonprofit that helps senior women on fixed income to obtain needed medical supplies. The city of Dundalk has a long history of supporting the arts and humanities. The town also has a history of support for the arts, humanities, and social justice. The U.S. Holocaust Museum is based in Dundalk and has hosted events in the city since the 1950s and 1960s, including the opening of the U.N. Museum in Washington, D.C. and the opening ceremony of the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1968. In the 1980s and 1990s, the city was home to a number of arts and culture events, including a film festival, a symphony, a theater, and a jazz festival. The community has also been involved in the development of the city's arts, culture, and heritage. The Dundalk River runs through the city and is a popular tourist destination. It is also the site of the annual Dundalk Renaissance Festival. The festival is held in the town's historic downtown area and is open to the public every year. It also has its own museum, the Dundalk Museum of Art, which was established in the 1920s. In 2008, the town was awarded a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts for its efforts to promote the arts. In 2010, a new museum was built in the downtown area. The museum was dedicated to the memory of the original Dundalk residents, the first of many.

The UV Index has been defined by the WHO (www.who.int/news-room/questions-and-answers/item/radiation-the-ultraviolet-(uv)-index) and is uniform worldwide.
