Slidell is a city on the northeast shore of Lake Pontchartrain in St. Tammany Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 28,781 at the 2020 census. It is part of the New OrleansMetairieKenner metropolitan statistical area. The Slidell Museum is a small museum that highlights the founding of the city as a railroad town. On August 29, 2005, Slidell suffered extensive damage from Hurricane Katrina, as the storm made final landfall on the morning of August 29. The municipal area is about 2 miles (3 km) inland, and parts of Slidell experienced a storm surge in excess of 10 feet (3.0 m) The city is located at 30.N 89°46.40W (309040,77 feet) and has an elevation of 13.4 m (4.0 feet) It is located approximately 3 miles (5 km) north of LakePontchartrain. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 152 square miles (38.4 km), or 239 square km (035.9 km²) The National Weather Service forecast office for the New. Orleans and Baton Rouge area is also in Slidell. Slidell is the headquarters of Vesco Tennis Courts, a privately held firm specializing in construction of hard surfaces for outdoor sports facilities. The city forms the Greater New Orleans area according to the United States Census Bureau. It was named in honor of American politician and Confederate ambassador to France John Slidell, and officially chartered by the Louisiana State Legislature in 1888.

History

Slidell was founded on the north shore of Lake Pontchartrain in 1882 and 1883 during construction of the New Orleans and Northeastern Railroad. A large creosote plant was built, and Slidell became home to the Fritz Salmen Brickyard, a major producer of bricks later named St. Joe Brick. In the 1960s, NASA opened the Michoud Assembly Facility in New Orleans, the John C. Stennis Space Center in nearby Bay St. Louis, and a NASA computer center on Gause Boulevard. The city has hosted several parade krewes each Carnival season. Geography

Slidell is located at 30°1645N 89°4640W (30.279040, -89.777744), and has an elevation of 13 feet (4.0 m) It is in southeastern St. Tammany Parish, located approximately 3 miles (5 km) north of Lake Pontchartrain. The city has a humid subtropical climate, with short, generally mild winters (slightly cooler than the southshore part of the New Orleans area) and hot, humid summers. Hurricanes pose a threat to the area, and the city is vulnerable because of its low elevation. According to the United States Census Bureau, the City has a total area of 15.2 square miles (39.4 km²), of which 14.8 squaremile (38.4km²) is land and 0.35 square mile (0.9km²), or 2.39%, is water. It is located in the St.Tammany Parish area of southeastern Louisiana, and is in the Greater New Orleans region of the U.S. State of Louisiana is in Slidell's drainage basin. It has a population of 1,788. The City is home to the Slidell Memorial Hospital, which was established in 1883. It was the first hospital in the state of Louisiana to open in 1881. The hospital was the second hospital to open after New Orleans in 1885. It closed in 1891. It reopened in 1894, and has since become a hospital.

Demographics

As of the 2020 United States census, there were 28,781 people, 9,818 households, and 6,430 families residing in the city. In 2000, the population was 25,695. At the 2010 U.S. census, 27,068 people, 10,050 households and 7,145 families resided in Slidell. Residents of Slidell had a median household income of $54,906 and 15.1% of the population lived at or below the poverty line. Of the population in 2019, the median age was 36.7 and 73.2% were aged 18 and older; an estimated 15.9% were 65 and older. In 2010, the racial makeup of the city was 76.0% White, 17.0%, Black and African American, 0.5% Native American, 1.6% Asian, 0%.0% Pacific Islander, 2.7% from other races, and 2.3% from two or more races. Hispanics and Latin Americans of any race were 6.3%. Of the 10,000 households in 2010, 31.6%. had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.9%. were married couples living together, 16.2%. had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.9. were non-families. The average household size was 2.66 and the average family size was 3.13. In 2020, the city's racial and ethnic makeup will be 71.8% non-Hispanic white.

Economy

Slidell is the global headquarters for automotive manufacturer and military contractor Textron Marine & Land Systems off Gause Boulevard. The city is home to the U.S. Air Force Academy and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. It is also the home of the National Football League's Las Vegas franchise, the Las Vegas 49ers and the NFL's San Francisco 49ers. It was the site of the World War II-era Battle of the Bulge, which ended in a stalemate in the late 1950s and early 1960s.

Education

Northshore Technical Community College has its main campus in Lacombe. Nunez Community College in Chalmette and the Sidney Collier Campus of Delgado Community College are in proximity to the parish. There are three public high schools in Slidell: Northshore High School, Salmen High School; and Slidell High School. Pope John Paul II High School and First Baptist Christian School are two private high schools. The Slidell Learning Center and later the Northshore-Slidell campus, and with Covington having the North Shore-Covington Campus, closed in 2016 due to financial issues. The latter opened in summer 2002; the Slidell campus closed in summer 2016. The St. Tammany Parish Public Schools are operated by the St.Tammany Parish School Board. The parish is home to the Louisiana State University at New Orleans East and the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. It is also the home of the New Orleans Saints and the Louisiana Super Bowl XLVII champion New Orleans Echols. The Saints' home stadium is the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. The Pelicans' home field is the Louisiana Tech campus, which is located in the French Quarter. The Super Bowl is held on the LSU campus in New Orleans; the Saints also have a home field in the Louisiana Medical Examiner's Office in the LSU Medical Center, which opened in 1998. The Louisiana State Police Department is based in the parish; the LSPD has a station in the town of Slidell. The LPSD also has a substation in the city of New Orleans.

Transportation

Amtraks Crescent serves Slidell station, and offers service to New York City, Washington, D.C., Atlanta, Birmingham, New Orleans, and intermediate points. The station is located on Front Street in Olde Towne Slidell. Slidell is on the southwest corner of the intersection of Interstate 10, Interstate 12, Interstate 59, and U.S. Highway 11. The I-10 Twin Span Bridge runs from Slidell to New Orleans East across Lake Pontchartrain. The airport is a city-owned public-use airport four nautical miles (7 km) northwest of Slidell's central business district. It is assigned ASD by the FAA but has no designation from the IATA (which assigned ASD to Andros Town Airport in the Bahamas), which uses KASD for its main airport in New Orleans and ASD for its secondary airport in Tampa, Florida.
