Wilmington is a city in Will County, Illinois, United States. It is located on the banks of the Kankakee River, approximately 50 miles (80 km) southwest of Chicago and 15 miles (24 km) south of Joliet. The population was 5,724 at the 2010 census. It was the scene of the brutal murder of Riley Fox in 1979. A bus-station scene from Planes, Trains & Automobiles was filmed in nearby Braidwood. Wilmington is also home to Cinder Ridge Golf Course, located off of I-55. The city has a total area of 4.5 square miles (12 km²), of which 4.2 sq miles (11 km²) is land and 0.3 sq mi (0.78 km²)" is water" Wilmington was founded by Thomas Cox in 1834. It later became famous as a stop on U.S. Route 66, which followed the route of modern-day Illinois Route 53. A notable attraction for travelers along this route is the "Gemini Giant" Muffler Man type statue located next to the Launching Pad fast food restaurant. The only rest-inn within the town is called "Van Duyne's" and is situated right on old Route 66. The island is the source of the city's nickname, "The Island City," and is occupied by a city park. In the city, the population was spread out, with 26.3% under the age of 18, 8.3%. from 18 to 24, 29.4% from 25 to 44, 22.9% from 45 to 64, and 13.1% who were 65 and over.

History

Wilmington is the primary city name, but also Custer Park are acceptable city names or spellings, Ballou, Lorenzo, Ritchie, Symerton on the other hand no longer accepted or obsolete and are no longer used as a designation. The official name is Wilmington, Illinois. Wilmington was founded by Thomas Cox in 1834. It later became famous as a stop on U.S. Route 66, which followed the route of modern-day Illinois Route 53. A bus-station scene from Planes, Trains & Automobiles was filmed in nearby Braidwood. Wilmington is also home to Cinder Ridge Golf Course, located off of I-55. Wilmington was the scene of the brutal Murder of Riley Fox in the movie "Riley Fox", which was filmed on location in the town in 2010. The town is also the location of the historic Eagle Hotel. The only rest-inn within the town is called "Van Duyne's" and is situated right on old Route 66. A notable attraction for travelers along this route is the "Gemini Giant" Muffler Man type statue located next to the Launching Pad fast food restaurant. The Gemini Giant is a statue of a man wearing a mask and holding a gun. It is located on the northwest corner of state Rt 53 (Rt 66) and Water street (RT 102). The town was also the site of the murder of RileyFox in the film "R Riley Fox, the Movie" which was shot in the area in 2010 and 2011. The bus station was demolished in 2011 and is now located on a golf course off of Rt 55 (Illinois Route 53) The town has a population of about 2,000. It was once known as "Wilmington, Illinois" before it was incorporated as a town.

Geography

Wilmington is located at 41°1827N 88°0846W. It is located on the banks of the Kankakee River, approximately 50 miles (80 km) southwest of Chicago and 15 miles (24 km) south of Joliet. The city has a total area of 4.5 square miles (12 km²), of which 4.2 sq miles (11 km²) is land and 0.3sq miles (0.78km²) (6.86%) is water. The island is the source of the city's nickname, "The Island City." The city is located in the Midwest, and is located near the Illinois-Illinois border. It has a population of 2,816. The population of Wilmington was 2,715 in the 2010 Census. The U.S. Census Bureau estimates Wilmington's population to be 2,917. The current mayor of Wilmington is John McWhorter, who has been in office since 2007. Wilmington is located between Chicago and Joliet, Illinois, on the Illinois Turnpike. The town is in the Illinois River drainage basin and is on the outskirts of the Chicago metropolitan area. It was founded in the early 1900s as a mill town, and has a large island in the river that divides a large channel and a smaller one which was used as a natural mill race during the early years of the town. It also has a small island which is occupied by a city park, which is called the "Island City".

As of the census of 2000, there were 5,134 people, 1,991 households, and 1,318 families residing in the city. The racial makeup of the city was 97.14% White, 0.74% African American,0.35% Native American, 0.29% Asian, 0.,02% Pacific Islander, 0,60% from other races, and 0.86% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.95% of the population. About 5.2% of families and 5.3%. of the town's population were below the poverty line, including 5.1%. The median income for a household in the town was $45,659, and the median family income was $53,648. There were 2,097 housing units at an average density of 497.6/sq mi (192.3/km²) The city has a population of 5,135.
